In Hadapsar, a 30-year-old woman admitted to a private hospital for dengue-led thrombocytopenia experienced an unexpected and substantial vision loss in one of her eyes. According to the doctors, inflammation of the blood vessels and arteries of the retina caused the woman to develop retinal vasculitis and vitreous hemorrhage, which resulted in bleeding in the vitreous chamber of her left eye.

Although she has regained some of her eyesight and was discharged recently, the doctor on her case stated that she needs treatment for at least one month to fully recover her vision. The doctor revealed that her platelet count had dropped to 11,000, which is extremely low. He also added that the woman had no history of eye problems or other underlying medical conditions.

Dr. Vishvesh Agarwal, an eye surgeon at Sahyadri Hospital, explained that low platelet counts in dengue patients can affect the eye in the form of the subconjunctival haemorrhage, vitreous hemorrhage, subretinal haemorrhage, etc.

Dr. Aditya Kelkar, of the National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO), noted that in dengue patients diagnosed with retinal vasculitis, changes in the blood vessel walls, such as thickening, weakening, narrowing, scarring, or swelling, are commonly observed.
